Spirit of Ephemerality

Ephemerality is defined by a fugitive moment, a short period of time, brief and fleeting. This could be an instant of silence, calmness or a feeling deep inside. It could be a swift emotion or thought provoked by an observation of someone or something. It could be a fleeting memory or a temporary wishful thinking. 'Spirit of Ephemerality' is a collection of mixed media artworks that combine photography, encaustic medium, oil paints with cold wax medium and string on wooden boards.

Streets of Jozi
The original images were taken on different Graffiti Photo Walks through various artsy neighborhoods in Johannesburg. I was immediately attracted to the impressive array of Street Art. I was shown that art can arise everywhere and under even bad conditions. With this series of artworks I give an interpretation of my experiences with these poverty-stricken areas. I want to show the contrast between beauty and decay’s ugliness, between energetic creativity and negligence. The mixed media artworks were realised with a mixture of silver foil, oxidation medium, oil colors and cold wax. The finished artwork was reshot for a print version.
